The Advanced Manufacturing Consortium (AMC), in partnership with Northwest State Community College and The Ridge Project, is thrilled to announce the successful completion of its innovative training program aimed at preparing individuals for rewarding careers in the welding field. This comprehensive pilot program equipped seven participants with essential technical skills and career readiness knowledge, opening doors to entry-level welding positions in the region’s thriving manufacturing sector.
Empowering Participants through Technical Training
The program’s core focused on comprehensive technical training in various welding processes, including:
- Basic Gas Metal Arc Welding (GMAW): Participants mastered this versatile welding technique, widely used in various industries for its flexibility and efficiency.
- Plasma Arc Cutting (PAC): This cutting-edge technology, known for its precision and speed, was explored to expand participants’ skillsets.
- Oxy Acetylene Cutting (OAC): A fundamental skill for welders, OAC cutting techniques were taught for versatility in different welding applications.
- Weld Symbols and Blueprints: Understanding technical drawings and weld symbols is crucial for welders, and the program ensured participants could interpret blueprints with confidence.
“From the first day that we did it, until now, I’ve learned so much. I mean, I’ve never touched a welder or turned on a welder in my life, and now I’m out there welding pieces of metal together. It’s really surprising the help that this program has done (for me),” said Mona Bejarano, participant and completer of this pilot welding program.
Through hands-on training and expert guidance, participants gained the practical skills and theoretical knowledge necessary to operate welding equipment safely and efficiently. They learned machine setup, welding techniques, and the principles behind each process, setting a solid foundation for their future careers.
Career Readiness Workshops: Building a Holistic Skillset
In addition to technical training, the program recognized the importance of career readiness skills for long-term success. Participants engaged in a series of workshops covering essential topics such as:
- Leadership Training: Participants developed essential leadership qualities through the Tyro leadership training program.
- Goal Setting: Setting and achieving personal and professional goals were emphasized to foster continuous growth.
- Career Advancement: Strategies for getting ahead on the job and utilizing career assessment tools were discussed.
- Professional Development: Enhancing communication skills, including technology etiquette, professional emails, and social media presence, was prioritized.
- Soft Skills: Workshops on conflict management, teamwork, time management, stress management, and financial literacy equipped participants with valuable life skills.
By addressing these critical areas, the program ensured that graduates were not only skilled welders but also well-rounded professionals ready to thrive in the workplace.

The manufacturing industry is experiencing a growing demand for skilled welders. This program has not only empowered participants with the skills needed to meet this demand but has also ignited a passion for a fulfilling career path.
“We hope for the students to achieve a number of goals with this welding program. They just have not been made aware of the opportunities out there with jobs and so we hope that welding might spark an interest in skilled trades. Maybe it’s hydraulics or pneumatics. It could be welding or fabrication,” said Jim Drewes, dean of the workforce division at Northwest State Community College. “We hope to give them employment opportunities and to open their opportunities to the manufacturing environment in Northwest Ohio. There’s just so many opportunities out there for these students.”
